get text from a text file into pic16F877A via serial port ?

i need to get text from a line , in a text file on pc to pic16f877a via serial port
which can be processed to display, by using leds connected to output ports
how can i achieve this ? is this even possible?
file must be accessed from a linux machine

Of course it's possible. You have to write a PC application that will read the file and send each character, and to write a PIC firmware that will receive these data and display it.

But without more information I can't say more.

What is the preferred method of extracting text from file in windows environment?

thanx for the reply
I googled a bit and found that you can send data to pic through RS232 communication
can send and receive through Tx and Rx ports respectively ..........

......... i want the pic to send a signal (integer which states the line to be read from the text file ).

the software on the pc should receive this signal from the pic ; and send the string from that particular line to the pic through Rx port (which pic receives and stores in some variable for further processing to display )

can i get an example program for the pic ?

im reading on how to send data to and from serial port from a linux system so as to write the program on the pc side (linux)
