Can anyone tell me why the 8720 has been replaced by 8722?

8720 is a subset of 8722. The cost of chip manufacturing is, probably, the same for both of them. So, in order to cut logistic expenses associated with maintainance, stocks etc., MicroChip decided to discontinue the older model.

This is just a guess.

If I'm not mistaken the 8720 also had a LOT of silicon bugs when it first came out. I wouldn't be surprised if the 8722 wasn't a superset of the 8720 + fixed bugs.

Buggy. First batch wouldn't work over 4MHz. Final batch wouldn't work over 25MHz.
