Using ICD-U40 to program a blank PIC? Is it possible?

Hi everyone,
I have a blank PIC in a circuit, and I want to program it. I sort of remember reading that you can only re-program a PIC using the ICD-U40, but not a blank PIC. Its a PIC18F252.
Is it possible to program a blank PIC18F252 in circuit using the ICD-U40?
Thanks.

Yes you can program a blank chip. The fact it is already in a circuit is not relevant.
When you run the debugger it uses a special module within the chip combined with some software placed near the end of the code space. When you program a chip you don't need that software used for debugging.
