Using ICD-U40 to program a blank PIC? Is it possible?

Hi everyone,

I have a blank PIC in a circuit, and I want to program it. I sort of remember reading that you can only re-program a PIC using the ICD-U40, but not a blank PIC. Its a PIC18F252.

Is it possible to program a blank PIC18F252 in circuit using the ICD-U40?

Yeah, sure, I program lots of brand new chips with the ICD-U40. Have you tried it?

No I have not, but I just called CCS and they said it should work no problem. For some reason, I had it in my head that it is more difficult to program blank chips than chips with code already on them.

Thats only true if you are using a bootloader in which case you have to use the ICDU-40 to program the bootloader code into the PIC first before the bootloader will work.
