Possible to use ICD-U40 with Microchip MPLAB?

Is it possible to use the ICD-U40 with MPLAB instead of the CCS IDE interface? The ICD-U40 is cheaper than the Microchip ICD2, and MPLAB is free and has a macro assembler.

MPLAB only supports ICD2.
