There were a lot of issues with the USB powered ICD units not being able
to pull up low MCLR resistors to the required programming voltage.
That is why MicroChip increased the recommended resistor value. |

10K was the recommended value back in the ICD2 days. These were able
to drive a lower resistor.
The help for the ICD-U80 recommends 50K!. |
Out of curiosity, where is the doc for that on the U80. All I could find on the CCS website was the FAQ, but it lists 47k instead of 50k, so I think it is out of date. |

I believe it's not the design of the programmer, rather the actual PIC that's the problem ? ICSP 'should' be the same for all PICs.
It's been years since I ran into this problem so the details are 'fuzzy'. |
