CCS ICD-U64 vs Pickit2

Hi,

I want to upgrade my programmer (Pickit2) to a new version.

Pickit3 is out of question because you require MPLAB-X to program correctly and you have the standalone programmer like the Pickit2 but it's fan made and very buggy!

What about the ICD-U64...

Any pros and cons vs the old mighty pickit2?

I see that it's more integrated with the CCS IDE which is good.

How's debugging with that programmer and CCS IDE ?

I use the ICD-U64 and it works great for me on all chips I have tried
PIC33,30,24,18 and 16 series.

You do NOT have to use MPLAB-X to use a PICKit3 !!!!

I've used MPLAB V 8.86 ( somewhere in there) for YEARS and have NEVER had a problem burning PICs.
Burned everything from 12Fs, 16F to 18F46K22s...

There's even a 'clone' of the PICkit3 out now....

I still prefer PicKit2 whenever possible - it is fast, has standalone software, and provides selectable voltage to my circuit. I depend on it so much I always keep a spare. Also, unlike the ICD-U64, I don't have to click on "RUN" to get my application to start running after I load a program.
Unfortunately, Microchip is not keeping the devices file current, so newer chips are not supported.

I use ICD-U64 only when the PicKit2 won't serve. With PicKit2 attached I can usually use the PGD and PGC pins for other functions, for example I usually have the heartbeat LED PGD or PGC. Not so with ICD-U64 - I have to physically disconnect it for my heartbeat LED to work. Bummer...

There is standalone programming software for the PicKit3, similar to that used by the PicKit2 - you can find it in the software archives. It's just real sloooow!
