CAN is a broadcast bus. All nodes receive (at the hardware level) all data. Then the key is message filters. These determine whether a device accepts a packet. So two devices can talk to each other on the bus (within the limits of priority), as if they were talking without the other devices there. One of the bits in the messages can specify that a message is 'broadcast', in which case everyone sees it (BR=0).
