Odd update dates |

I was having problems with the example code for the CAN Bus 24 Dev Kit from CCS so I thought about checking that I had the latest versions.
When I look at the available updates via the Software Update Utility the CANBUS - CAN Bus Examples show as having a "Current Version" that is six-years older than my "Local version" - see attached screen shot. I feel there is something wrong here.
Anyone else have this?

Oh yes. The Download Manager is really quite bad. I have asked them many times to fix things but... I'm still waiting.
I can also tell you that IDEUTILS has been modified since 2005.
In the past they would release a new compiler version every week or two. Now it seems like nothing is getting updated. I wonder what they're doing. |

Is there a more reliable way to get updates?

Um, what is IDEUTILS? I've looked at the web download page and not seen it.

As I was writing this notification of a new version (v4.107) popped in to my inbox - newer part support and pic32/pic24 programmer support. If there were an even small updates every few weeks I'd be happy, I think. |

The only other way that I know of to get updates is manually through the download page at the website. Even then there have been cases where the version displayed shows no indication of a newer version even though there is one. This is because CCS uses sub-versions that are not shown. Example: 4.100.0 vs 4.100.1
IDEUTILS - Yes I recently had a look at the download page and also saw that it wasn't there. That's strange. Maybe it's no longer needed. In the past it was responsible for installing support functionality like the Flowcharter and Device Editor.
I too would be happier with more frequent, possibly less significant, updates. The way it is now it takes a month to figure out that they didn't fix the bugs you reported.
4.107 is the first mention, that I've seen, of PIC32. I really wish they wouldn't work on PIC32 until PIC24 (PCD) begins to perform as well as PCH. Not to mention the obvious improvements that could be made to CCS Load, SIOW, Download Manager and Device Editor. |

Thank you.
Now, where are the CAN Bus Examples? |

You probably already know this but in Download Manager you can check the box beside CAN Examples and when you click Next it will download them.
However, since you seem to have a newer version than what Download Manager is aware of, you probably don't want to do that. I would seek advice from CCS. |

If only it were that simple.
You were almost right. In fact ticking and clicking does appear to do something, but next time I look it reports exactly the same versions - at least it didn't delete my 'newer' version.

I have a support question about this already - so far no response from support other than the automated acknowledgement.
The problem is that I have the CAN Bus 24 Dev Kit. I'm quite sure the examples need updating as the Dev Kit board has a dsPIC device that's a different part number to the one in the examples. |

I'm happy to report that the latest update (dated 28-Apr-2010) of the CAN Bus examples from CCS has fixed this. The examples themselves have not changed, but the dates now make sense. I guess they fixed the installer scripts or the window's registry entries, or similar. |
