The PIC18 series has 16 bit instructions and 8 bit data.
The PIC16 series has 12 bit instructions and 8 bit data.
For 16 bit data you need to go to the PIC24 series which has 24 bit instructions.

Well, 16bit native data size.

A PIC18 or PIC16 can handle signed and unsigned integers that are 16bits in size... but they are (2) 8bit bytes.

The PIC24|dsPIC|PIC30/33 have 16bit native integer sizes (with the PIC30/33/dsPIC having even more interesting dsp-like instructions)
