MPLAB 6.20 and CCS PCH
PostPosted: Thu May 08, 2003 10:36 pm     Reply with quote

I see in MicroChip's site here:
<a href="http://www.microchip.com/1010/pline/tools/picmicro/devenv/mplabi/index.htm" TARGET="_blank">http://www.microchip.com/1010/pline/tools/picmicro/devenv/mplabi/index.htm</a>

only Hi-Tech C Compiler is shown as "Supported Third Party Tool"

Has anyone tried MPLAB 6.2, and PCH 3.156 ?

I am making the move up, in an effort to move to 18F452 PICs

Thanks
Cam

<font face="Courier New" size=-1>When yun install MPLAB 6.20, one of the questions it presents is the tool set that will be used.

The CCS Tool Suite is listed; if you check this option it tells you to download the MPLAB 6.x Plugin from CCS available here:

I have done all of the below steps and I still cannot compile from MPLAB 6.2. What I do is compile outside of 6.2 and then import my cod file. I have had no problems with 5.7.

Has anyone been able to compile within 6.2? Any help would be appreciated.

Compiling from MPLAB 6.2 and with the latest PCH is working fine here. I installed MPLAB, installed PCH and then installed the MPLAB tool from CCS to integrate them both. I then created a new project and selected the CCS compiler instead of MPASM (had to click the show all tools button to make CCS show up). Added a quick and simple hello world program and jammed the build all button in MPLAB.... it called the compiler and compiled up fine.

So, is it best to compile from MPLAB 6.2 instead of the PCW from CCS? Or do you do it that way because you don't have PCW?

Will MPLAB debugger debug the C code well, breakpoints, etc?

Did you install everything in the same directory (MPLAB 6.2, CCS, your .c and .h files)?

CCS was installed in the defaults directory (program files/picc) and mplab was in its default location (program files/mplab). The C files were created in a tmp directory at c:\temp.

There wasn't anything tricky. It just worked. By the way, it was with the 3.156 compiler. I've since tried the 3.158 and it worked fine also.

The only advantage to using MPLAB is that I had access to my picstart+ programmer I suppose. And the fact that I don't have a license for the PCW tools. <grin>

If you aren't using the Microchip programmer tools (for instance, if you are using a bootloader instead), then the PCW IDE will likely work better for you (easy access to help, wizard, etc...). I'm able to simulate the C code under MPLAB with breakpoints and whatnot without a problem. I have no idea if that is available from the CCS IDE or not.
