communication problem with gsm modem through pic

Hi
I'm doing a project on a gsm modem in which I have to send AT commands to a modem through a controller.
Which I am doing so. But the problem arises when I have to read this message, meaning I'm able to read this message only once, but next time the controller stops at the getc() function.
If I'm not using the getc() function, I'm able to send any command any time. Please can you do the needful.
