Has anyone tried to do Japanese, Korean, Chinese fonts on
a standard 16x2 LCD.
Do you buy the LCD with the fonts done, or do you re-write the CG-ROM?
How is it done? |

I think most LCD controllers on the market have the character set according to ROM code A00 in the original Hitachi HD44780 data sheet (the mother of all character LCD displays), including some japanese (Katakana?) characters. You can't rewrite the CG-ROM except for 8 user characters.
As all LCD controllers are mask programmed ASICs, there's no useable option to get a custom character set. Even the so called european font (Hitachi ROM code A02) seems to be hard to get. |

I guess the graphical LCD is my only option for now. |
