how to catch time reading using PIC16F877a?

Hi... I would like to ask how to write source code which can catch time object pass my sensor. I got IR sensor which will detect any motion whose pass the transmitter and receiver. When object pass the sensor, it will send 0 to the input port (port A). The main purpose is I want to catch the time object go thorugh the sensor and the time the object leave the sensor. This time's reading later will be sent through DB9 and the reading will display in VB6. On the VB6 interface, each time I click on the button 'get reading' it will display time object go through and object pass the sensor. I'm using the PIC16f877a. Anybody can help me?
