So the answer is: No, you don't need MPLAB if you have PCWH.
If you use PCWH as your IDE, you must use (typically) the ICD-U40
as your debugger. You can't use the Microchip ICD2 with PCWH.

Thks for your reply.
I tested it with the following steps:
(1) typed a file "test.c" as per sample in your graphic file
(2) manually craeted project and selected test.c as main file
(3) select 16f877 as device
(4) compiled it
I got the following prompt for the IDE:
Unable to write to C:\Program\PCWH\PICC\Quick Start\Test.pjt.
Could you pls help me to fix this problem?
