Is my PIC dead? |

Hi guys,
I'm fairly convinced I've killed my device but I just wanted to check the symptoms. I was programming and running happily for ages using the ICD-U40 and now when I try to program it I get a verification error in the configuration fuses, they are always stuck on: 00 27 0F 0F 00 01 85 00 0F C0 0F E0 0F 40.
I'm not sure exactly how I killed it but I do have a lot of 12V solenoid valves kicking around although they are all driven by proper drivers. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what is the usual cause of death, what are people doing to prevent PICs getting killed? Should I be providing some sort of protection on all i/o pins?
any suggestions would be appreciated
cheers
