ICD-U 40 stopped working ! |

I have been using ICD-U40 as PIC programmer for a couple of weeks using the stand alone ICD program. But after not using it for a week or so, suddenly it stopped working.
"Check COMM" gives all ok, "Test ICD" shows ok. But "Test target" says "ICD Error: Could not detect the target chip" or sometimes "Unknow PIC18 device, ID: 0101 ...." even though the PIC is 16F or 12F chips.
The same board and the ICD have been working fine previously with auto detecting the chip and programming without ptoblem. I reinstalled the USB driver and also ICD program but no help.
Any advice will be appreciated. |

Djpark,
I got the same problem too. My pic is 18f8720 with ICD-U. Usually, when that happens, I just reset the debugger few times and it starts working again. But this morning, even I reset the debugger 20 times, It won't work....
I have 2 ICD-U40, they also show the same problem...The ICD-U40s are new, I got them 3 months ago.

I am not sure if this problem is related.
ICD-U Alert
April 1st, 2005
CCS has found in revision 3 boards of ICD-U40 manufactured and distributed after January 2005 to have a software problem which can cause a coil to burn out. The sympoms include "ICD cannot detect target". CCS will replace any unit with such problems at no cost. We strongly recommend downloading the latest software from the web to prevent this problem. |

I had to realize one thing. This is a user forum and we exchange our
knowledge or experiences among the users, but it is not a technical
support center. We have to contact CCS support.
That particular alert hit my mind and also I found that there is a ICD
troubleshooting guide pdf file in CCS web page for download. It is really
well prepared with deep detail to diagnose.
From the testing procedures in the guide, I determined that the Vpp
(12V) is not coming out of the ICD-U. The guide suggested to contact
CCS for replacement and the alert offers to replace at no cost.
Since I am in a far country, I decided to repair myself. CCS support staff
is assisting me well and he surely knows his stuff. My ICD-U is not fully
repaired yet, but I know the problem and I will be able to fix it.

I wish to record that my ICD-U is finally repaired and working again.
The help from CCS support was great and I could easily adapt the advices to a new 12V boost circuit using TPS61041.
Thanks.
