USB keyboard

I know that the problems of implementing a USB master on a PIC have been covered before. Would it be possible to implement a USB keyboard input using the FDTI chip or a USB enabled PIC?

Nope, they are all USB clients.

About the best you can do without implementing a full USB host is to use a USB OTG (On The Go) chip. But even that is not so easy as it has quite a bit of bus negotiation/driver code that has to be done since it can function as both a (limited) host and client.
